What Ford automatic transmissions work with Modular pattern engines?

Ford Modular engines (4.6L, 5.4L) and the 5.0L Coyote all share a common bellhousing bolt pattern, which makes transmission compatibility relatively straightforward. Here is an overview of which automatic transmissions work with these engines.

COMPATIBLE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS:

4R70W / 4R75W: • The most common Modular-pattern automatic • Used with 4.6L and 5.4L engines in Mustangs, F-150s, Crown Victorias, and Lincoln applications through the 2000s • 4R75W is the updated version with higher torque capacity — same bellhousing, same dimensions • Widely available as remanufactured units • 4-speed overdrive with electronic controls

6R80: • Used in 2011+ F-150 with the 5.0L Coyote, and in 2011–2017 Mustang GT with the Coyote • 6-speed electronic overdrive • Significantly stronger and more modern than the 4R70W • Same Modular bellhousing bolt pattern

AODE / AOD-E: • The AODE is the electronic version of the original AOD — it preceded the 4R70W and is essentially the same transmission with an updated name • Some early Modular applications used the AODE

NOT COMPATIBLE (without major modification): • 5R110W: Used in Ford PowerStroke diesel trucks — not a Modular engine transmission despite Ford branding • C4 / C6 / AOD (mechanical): Require an adapter for use with Modular engines

If you're replacing or upgrading the transmission in a Modular-powered vehicle, the 4R70W is the most cost-effective and widely available option for most applications. The 6R80 is the better choice for 2011+ Coyote applications.
