The cooling fan is part of the cooling system, and it must be in proper working order before you start your replacement engine. A failed fan or fan clutch is one of the leading causes of overheating — which is a warranty-voiding failure.

MECHANICAL FAN WITH FAN CLUTCH (MOST COMMON): Most traditional V8 engine applications use a mechanical fan bolted to the water pump with a thermostatic fan clutch. The fan clutch varies the fan's rotational speed based on temperature — at low speeds and cold temps, it disengages to reduce drag; at high temps, it locks up to spin the fan harder.

How to inspect the fan clutch: • With the engine COLD, try to spin the fan blade by hand. On a good fan clutch, there should be noticeable resistance — it should not spin freely. • If the fan spins freely when cold (little or no resistance), the clutch has failed and must be replaced. • A failed fan clutch provides inadequate airflow, especially at low speeds and when idling — exactly the conditions when the cooling system is stressed the most.

Our installation checklist requires that the fan clutch be inspected and replaced if it shows any sign of failure.

ELECTRIC FANS (CUSTOM AND PERFORMANCE APPLICATIONS): Electric fans are a popular option for engine swaps, custom vehicles, and performance builds where a mechanical fan is impractical or where additional horsepower is the goal (no mechanical fan drag).

If using an electric fan: • Size the fan correctly for the radiator — match the CFM (cubic feet per minute) rating to the radiator's core area and your engine's heat output. • Use a fan controller or thermostatic switch so the fan turns on at the correct temperature. • Make sure the fan can provide adequate airflow when the vehicle is stopped — mechanical fans move more air at high RPM (highway), but electric fans need to compensate at idle.
