If you don't have access to the VIN — or the engine may have been swapped — you can identify your Ford Modular engine using visual inspection and casting numbers.

STEP 1 — 2V OR 4V? COUNT THE CAMS: This is the quickest check: • 2-Valve (SOHC): Each cylinder bank has ONE cam cover — two cam covers total. Simpler, lower-profile head. • 4-Valve (DOHC): Each cylinder bank has TWO cam covers — four cam covers total. Taller, more complex head design.

STEP 2 — 4.6L OR 5.4L? CHECK THE BLOCK CASTING: The block casting number is located on the passenger side of the block. Visually, the 5.4L is a taller block than the 4.6L — if you have the engine out of the vehicle, this is evident when comparing them side by side.

Common block casting numbers: • C = 4.6L (various castings depending on year and application) • 5.4L castings are distinctly different — look for numbers starting with XL (truck) or F (performance) depending on era

Note: Casting numbers on Modular engines can be difficult to read due to location and road grime. Clean the block surface thoroughly before reading.

STEP 3 — CHECK THE VALVE COVER BOLT PATTERN: • Older Modular engines use a 3-bolt valve cover pattern. • Newer Modular engines use a 4-bolt valve cover pattern. This can help narrow down the production era of the engine.

STEP 4 — CONFIRM WITH US: If you have partial information — a casting number, an approximate year, or the vehicle model — contact us at 1-844-XPARTS-1 or support@expediaparts.com. We'll help you pin down the exact engine before you order.
