Ford's Modular engine family (1991–present) uses the 8th VIN digit to identify the engine. Knowing the displacement and valve configuration is key when ordering a replacement.
FORD MODULAR VIN CODES (8TH DIGIT): X = 4.6L 2-valve (SOHC) W = 4.6L 4-valve (DOHC) V = 5.4L 2-valve (SOHC) Z = 5.4L 4-valve (DOHC)
UNDERSTANDING THE VALVE COUNT:
2-Valve engines (2V): • Single overhead cam (SOHC) — one cam per cylinder bank • Smaller intake and exhaust ports • Simpler head design • Found in base Mustang GTs, F-150s, Crown Victorias, and many fleet/police applications
4-Valve engines (4V): • Dual overhead cam (DOHC) — two cams per cylinder bank, four cams total • Larger, more complex ports • Significantly higher performance potential • Found in Mustang Cobras, Lincoln Mark VIII, SVT Lightning (5.4L)
DISPLACEMENT NOTES: • 4.6L and 5.4L share the same external block dimensions and bellhousing bolt pattern — making swaps between them relatively straightforward. • All Modular engines use the same basic bellhousing pattern, which is also shared with the later 5.0L Coyote.
