Basic Engine Swap Guide

Basic Engine Swap Guide
Text size

This guide provides a practical overview of the engine swap process. It is not a complete repair manual — consult a qualified mechanic and your vehicle's service manual for vehicle-specific procedures. All steps in our pre-installation checklist must be completed for your warranty to remain valid.

PREPARATION: • Gather all tools, gaskets, and fluids before starting. • Review our pre-installation checklist (included with your engine) in full before beginning. • Inspect the engine bay for any damaged wiring, broken mounts, or corroded coolant lines — repair these before installing the new engine.

WHAT TO TRANSFER FROM YOUR OLD ENGINE: • Accessories: alternator, power steering pump, A/C compressor (if not included) • Sensors: O2 sensors, coolant temp sensor, knock sensors (use new hardware where required) • Exhaust manifolds or headers • Motor mounts (inspect condition — replace if worn) • Intake components (if not included with new engine)

COOLING SYSTEM — REQUIRED BEFORE STARTUP: • Flush the entire cooling system — radiator, heater core, and block passages. • Install a new thermostat rated to factory specification. • Refill with a 50/50 mix of fresh coolant and distilled water. • A dirty or clogged cooling system is a leading cause of overheating-related warranty claims.

TIMING COMPONENTS: • On engines with a timing chain, inspect or replace the chain and guides during installation. This is significantly easier with the engine out.

OIL PRIMING — BEFORE FIRST START: • Prime the lubrication system before the first start. See article SR-00116 for the full procedure. • This is a required step — skipping it can cause immediate bearing damage.

FIRST STARTUP: • After priming, start the engine and immediately check for oil pressure. • Check for coolant, oil, and vacuum leaks. • Monitor temperature carefully — engine should reach normal operating temperature within a few minutes.

BREAK-IN PROCEDURE: • Drive conservatively for the first 500–1,000 miles. • Vary engine speed — avoid sustained highway cruising at one RPM. • Avoid heavy towing or maximum load during break-in. • No synthetic oil until 5,000 miles.

FIRST OIL CHANGE: • Change the oil and filter at 1,000 miles — no exceptions. • Continue oil changes every 3,000 miles at a licensed shop. • Keep all service records for warranty documentation.
