Ford's big block lineup includes the FE-series, the 385-series, and the rare MEL-series. Each is a distinct engine family. For FE-series and 385-series casting numbers, see article SR-00651. This article covers the MEL-series.

MEL-SERIES (383–430 CI) CASTING NUMBERS: C0AE-6015-D: 430 ci MEL — 1960 (used in Lincoln Continental and high-end Ford/Mercury vehicles) C1AE-6015-H: 390 ci MEL — 1961 (Lincoln and Mercury applications)

WHAT IS THE MEL SERIES? MEL stands for Mercury-Edsel-Lincoln — this engine family was built primarily for luxury and flagship Ford Motor Company vehicles in the late 1950s and early 1960s. The MEL includes the 383, 410, 430, and 462 cubic inch engines.

MEL VS. FE: The MEL engine is often confused with the FE series because both have similar displacement ranges: • MEL engines were used primarily in Lincoln, Mercury, and Edsel — NOT in Mustangs, Fairlanes, or F-series trucks • MEL engines are physically larger and heavier than FE engines • The bellhousing bolt pattern and accessory locations are different • MEL engines are rare in replacement and performance applications

IMPORTANT NOTE FOR ORDERING: MEL engines are uncommon, and finding correct replacement parts requires careful confirmation. If you believe you have a MEL engine, call us with your casting number and vehicle year before ordering. We can confirm fitment.
