Small block Ford (SBF) engines — the 289, 302, and 351 Windsor — share a common bellhousing bolt pattern and external dimensions, but have different internal specs. Casting numbers help you identify which exact engine you have.
WHERE TO FIND THE CASTING NUMBER: The block casting number on a small block Ford is located on the passenger side of the block, below the cylinder head. It may require cleaning to read clearly.
COMMON SBF BLOCK CASTING NUMBERS: C9OE-6015-A: 289 or 302 — 1969 (used in Mustang, Falcon, and other Ford applications) D0OE-6015-A: 302 Boss / 5.0 — 1970 (Boss 302 applications and early 5.0 HO) E7TE-AA: 5.0L HO — 1987–1993 (the most common late-model 5.0; found in Mustang GT and Fox body trucks)
UNDERSTANDING FORD CASTING NUMBER FORMAT: Ford casting numbers follow a date-code format: the first letter indicates the decade (C = 1960s, D = 1970s, E = 1980s), the second character is the year within the decade, the next letter(s) indicate the division or vehicle line, and the remaining numbers are the part number.
BELLHOUSING COMPATIBILITY NOTE: The 289, 302, and 351 Windsor all share the same bellhousing bolt pattern. This means they are largely interchangeable in terms of transmission and mounting — a major advantage for swaps and rebuilds.
Note: The 351 Cleveland and 351 Modified (351M/400) use different bellhousing patterns and are NOT interchangeable with the Windsor family in that regard.
