Remanufactured engine break-in procedures
Text size

Your remanufactured engine needs a proper break-in period. How you treat the engine in the first 600 miles has a direct impact on its long-term performance and life expectancy. Follow these procedures carefully.

DURING THE FIRST 600 MILES

  • Vary your speed. Do not drive at a single constant speed for extended periods. Varying your speed allows the engine components to seat properly. Avoid highway cruising at a locked speed during this period.
  • Do not tow. Do not tow a trailer or put any heavy load on the vehicle during the break-in period.
  • Check fluids daily. Check engine oil and coolant levels every day during the first 600 miles. Address any leaks or drops in level immediately.
  • No synthetic oil yet. Do not use synthetic engine oil until after the first 5,000 miles. Conventional oil is required during the break-in period.
  • At initial startup: Readjust valves to your vehicle manufacturer's specifications where this is applicable to your engine type.

600-MILE CHECKUP — REQUIRED

After the first 600 miles of operation, take your vehicle to an authorized service center for the following service:

  • Oil and filter change
  • Fuel and ignition settings inspection and adjustment
  • Valve adjustment (where applicable)

This 600-mile checkup is NOT covered under warranty — it is your responsibility as the owner. However, it is required. Skipping this checkup can cause premature engine wear and may affect your warranty coverage.

AFTER THE BREAK-IN PERIOD

Once you've completed the break-in and the 600-mile checkup, continue maintaining the engine to the original manufacturer's specifications. Keep all service records from authorized shops — you'll need them if you ever file a warranty claim.
