Used transmission pre-installation checklist

Used transmission pre-installation checklist
Text size

Complete every item on this checklist before installing your used transmission. Skipping steps voids your warranty and can lead to transmission failure shortly after installation. Your technician should review this list before work begins.

PRE-INSTALLATION CHECKLIST

1. Identify the cause of the original transmission failure. Determine exactly why the original transmission failed and address the root cause before installing the replacement. An unresolved problem will cause the replacement to fail as well.

2. Confirm compatibility. Verify that the replacement transmission is correct for your vehicle's year, make, model, and drivetrain configuration.

3. Remove the oil pan and replace the filter and all in-line filters. This includes all in-line filters in the transmission oil cooler circuit.

4. Replace the converter seal and all external seals.

5. Install the torque converter carefully into the front pump. Verify that the pump shaft or input shaft is properly seated and engaged. Improper torque converter installation is a leading cause of transmission damage at startup.

6. Replace all sensors with new units.

7. Flush the transmission cooler lines and the radiator. Use a power flush or a Cooler Flush Kit. Confirm that fluid is flowing freely and properly through the cooling system. A blocked or contaminated cooler will overheat the new transmission.

8. Replace the radiator and transmission cooler if recommended by the manufacturer.

9. Clear all transmission computer codes. Before starting or operating the vehicle, clear all stored diagnostic codes from the transmission control module.

10. Have the dealer or a qualified technician reset and program shift adapts. This step is essential for proper transmission operation and must not be skipped.

11. Fill the transmission with the OEM-recommended fluid. Do not substitute aftermarket or non-specified fluids. Use the exact fluid specified by the vehicle manufacturer.

12. Check the differential section for proper fluid level (if applicable to your vehicle).

13. Verify that axle side gears are properly in place before reassembling.

AFTER INSTALLATION

If your vehicle requires re-flashing or reprogramming of the transmission control module, this must be completed before the vehicle is driven. Failure to reprogram where required voids the warranty.

Keep all service records from this installation. All records must come from an authorized service center — handwritten or personal notes are not accepted for warranty purposes.
